20 PS2 Games That Prove It's The Best Console Ever

19. Gauntlet: Dark Legacy

GTA: San Andreas Follow the train
Midway Games

A classic dungeon crawler complete with booming wizard to guide your way, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is one of those titles that can easily be glossed over - but if you’ve any inclination towards slashing your way through the denizens of hell, as I’m sure most of us do, then it’s likely to have some appeal.

Based on the arcade games that preceded it and packed full of fantasy fun, Dark Legacy is the perfect co-op game to power through with friends, rewarding players with unlockable characters, impressive level ups, and entertaining powers (including turning into a chicken) along the way to bring peace across the realms. You know the gist of these things by now.

The sprawling amount of levels and various fantasy themed portals make it insanely fun to replay with any amount of characters, or on your own, and the classic arcade styling only serves to make its content last that much longer for the ‘retro’ quality.

Traversing between castles, mountains, hellscapes and more in the search of crystals and treasure just never gets old in any game setting. Gauntlet distills the classic fantasy gameplay into one massive adventure that knows exactly what it is, then delivers it in a way that makes fans of Golden Axe and Altered Beast sigh in contentment. It really is the peak of arcade gaming.
