20 Scariest Video Games Of All-Time

11. System Shock 2

System Shock 2
Irrational Games

Before there was BioShock, there was System Shock 2, a game which strands players on a near-abandoned spaceship and proceeds to try and frighten them to death for the sum of its parts. BioShock very nearly made our list for its own spooky aesthetics, of course, but it's System Shock 2 that beats it to the punch.

What's interesting is that System Shock 2 isn't "scary" in the traditional sense - the fear factor stems from the fact that - for the entire game - you're struggling to survive whilst also being invaded by mind ghosts. As a result, System Shock 2 should be praised for the fact that it's really, really creepy and yet it doesn't bother with jump scares or things running around in the darkness... the atmosphere alone, and the way in which the game messes with your mind, makes you paranoid, and forces you to reconsider your options time and time again, that makes it truly frightening.

Whereas some might not fail to see what, exactly, the big deal is, those who ventured onto that ship back in the day know how creepy it was to play this.
