4. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
Combine the instant-satisfaction and tactile gameplay of 2D with a top-down shooter that's powered by an pounding electro-synth soundtrack, and you have one of the most enjoyable and ludicrously violent games to arrive in quite some time. Dennaton's first Hotline Miami hit the ground positively sprinting, and for the sequel they've managed to expand the level layouts and extrapolate on the story in every way possible. Basically, in the world of the game, protagonist Jacket's criminal ways have been covered profusely by the media; resulting in everything from copycat killers to tribute acts, hard-boiled detectives on the case and more. You play as each one of them, all providing great takes on the idea of hyper-mediated violence, alongside pulling at a particular thread tucked away in the original's secret ending. Gameplay-wise it's literally more of the same, the only things that've changed being tweaks to the A.I. routines and the addition of a more focussed bunch of weapons, but when you're popping heads, executing downed enemies and indulging in the best soundtrack there's been in years, Wrong Number comes together into a far more impressive package than its predecessor.
