18. Wolfenstein: The New Order
What was that earlier about tons of games having a solid focus on blowing the eyebrows off everything in front of you? Yeah, well, if you're going to do it, do it well. Scratch the occasionally bloody likes of Call of Duty or Battlefield, their paltry squibs barely connoting any sense of viscera. Instead, let's dual-wield some miniguns, twin assault shotguns, a ripped turret straight from the ground. Point any and all at a roomful of soldiers - it'll turn everything within to paste, every single one feeling absolutely incredible to wield. Your reason to fight is solid enough; a fairly bog-standard revenge arc punctuated by an actually incredibly frank and realistic portrayal of two soldiers falling in love (you'll see). The main reason you're here is for the gunplay though, which in a departure from the likes of Destiny, Halo or COD, has a fairly loose-yet-accurate feel to your movement, something that adds to a great feel when getting behind the bulkier weapons. It's rare to see a studio do a dedicated single-player FPS these days, but when it's MachineGames - a new studio comprised of The Darkness chaps, Starbreeze - you can guarantee there's a mark of quality few developers could ever match up to.
