20 Things We Learned From Gamescom 2016
11. Batman: Arkham VR Has The Best Intentions... But Falls A Little Short
Now, we've got a reactions video going up on the WCG Youtube channel where you'll find a more positive opinion on Rocksteady's latest Arkham title, but for me, I was left a little underwhelmed.
It's true that many PS VR games are gearing towards being 'experiences' as oppose to games - mostly to ease players into the idea of having their eyeballs completely taken over for any length of time - but in action, donning the PS VR and playing Batman Arkham VR was a blurry and only sporadically rewarding experience.
Starting out as Bruce in Wayne Manor, you get to converse with Alfred, descend into the Batcave and suit up with both gauntlets and the cowl (easily the best part of the whole thing), but it's here that you realise just how scripted every last portion of the experience is. Easily the best part of VR comes with interfacing with the world around you, and once you have the Batsuit on, there is a brief window of time where you can opt to freely use batarangs, your grapple gun and a scanner.
Using these freely starts to blur the lines between reality and video game, but it must also be said that due to the manufacturing cost of the PS VR (which is far less than Valve's VIVE or the Oculus Rift), your view is constantly out of focus. As a five minute demo at a games convention, it's totally fine, but as a paid-for product... right now, not so much.
