The film's shoot was divided between locations in California and Thailand, with the latter proving particularly challenging from a logistical perspective due to how remote the sets were.

Many of the Thai locations could only be accessed by boat, requiring the cast, crew, and their equipment to all be transported in long canoes.

Location manager Gerrit Folsom then decided to build an "outhouse" area on set to prevent time-consuming trips back to the mainland for toilet breaks.

It was certainly a smart call compared to another huge 1995 movie, Waterworld, which didn't have quite so much foresight and had to waste ample time and money continually ferrying the cast and crew back to dry land to use the bathroom.
