Though the character of Kano was originally presented as a Japanese-American in the early video games, the choice to have actor Trevor Goddard portray him in the movie as a boorish Australian influenced the character's depiction forever more.

Goddard, a British actor, decided to give Kano an Aussie accent, a flourish which was approved by series co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias because they were so impressed with Goddard's go-for-broke performance in the role.

Ultimately, this portrayal resonated with fans of the franchise, resulting in Boon and Tobias retconning Kano to be an Australian in all future Mortal Kombat games. That's the ultimate compliment to Goddard's fine work, really.
