Antagonist Goro isn't played by a human but a complex and relatively impressive animatronic considering the film's modest $18 million budget.

However, Goro was by far the most complex component of the film's production, with the $1 million animatronic requiring up to 16 crew members to operate. Furthermore, it would routinely break down, causing major delays during shooting.

The sensible decision was made to shoot all of Goro's scenes in Los Angeles, for fear that transporting the animatronic to Thailand could cause further issues.

But even back in L.A., a set intended for one of Goro's fight scenes had to be redesigned, as it was originally filled with ponds and water, which the crew came to realise risked damaging the animatronic's circuitry.
