Mortal Kombat is one of those rare films which wasn't screened for critics, which is typically an indication that the studio has no faith in it and expects it to receive universal critical scorn.

And while the movie was hardly a smash hit with the press who eventually paid out of their own pocket to see it, it wasn't panned either.

Several prominent outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Empire, and critic Gene Giskel gave it positive notices, while the majority of critics fell somewhere in the middle.

And despite most movies that aren't screened for critics being pilloried by audiences also, Mortal Kombat impressively netted an "A-" CinemaScore, suggesting most viewers went home satisfied.
