Though Bridgette Wilson ended up playing the female lead Sonya Blade, the part was originally given to Cameron Diaz, who was fresh off her startling Hollywood debut role in The Mask.

Diaz was hired after producers saw dailies from that movie, and before she exited Mortal Kombat she was already deep into training to play Sonya.

However, she eventually had to duck out of the role after breaking her wrist during training shortly before filming was set to begin.

Though Christina Applegate, Dina Meyer, and even Sharon Stone were reportedly considered to play Sonya at various points, in the end Wilson won the role, after having auditioned several times and even moving onto other projects.

Wilson's hiring was so sudden that she had to be flown to set the very next day after winning the part, while spending her downtime between filming training for the bigger fight scenes later in the shoot.
