Once principal photography was completed, a rough cut of the movie was shown to test audiences, who largely complained about the lack of actual fighting in the movie.

As a result, the film was delayed for three months while reshoots were completed.

This included adding the fan favourite character Reptile (Keith Cooke) into the movie for a fight with Liu Kang, a sequence which was difficult to shoot because Paul W.S. Anderson didn't yet know what Reptile's CGI form would look like.

Additionally, reshoots extended the fight between Johnny Cage and Scorpion, and also added Shao Kahn's (Frank Welker) last-minute, sequel-baiting arrival.
