20 Toughest Video Game Characters Of All Time

4. Kratos

First Appearance: God of War (2005) Around 15 minutes into the first God of War game when you have just butchered the Lernaean Hydra of Myth using two giant-daggers attached to the ends of chains, it became fairly evident that the Ghost of Sparta was in a different league to other gaming characters in terms of the sheer gratuitous brutality he was capable of. In the seven games we have seen him in since 2005, Kratos has proven that he is anything but your average video-gaming hero; motivated (and practically consumed) by the pursuit of revenge, incapable of forgiveness and always eager to brutalise and/or mutilate. Defined by violence, it would be a difficult task to argue that Kratos isn€™t one of the toughest characters we have ever played puppet-master to. As well as slaughtering literally thousands of mythical creatures over the course of the series, he has also laid waste to some of the largest and most intimidating bosses ever (exquisitely designed by the guys over at Sony Computer Entertainment, Santa Monica). Kratos is such a manly man (or is it Godly God?) that one woman isn€™t enough to satisfy his carnal desires either - in that notorious mini-game in the first God of War, you are tasked with a rhythm challenge to ensure the Ghost of Sparta can please two strumpets simultaneously.
