20 Video Games That Defined 20 Years Of PlayStation
5. Shadow Of The Colossus
Shadow Of The Colossus is a landmark achievement in video game design. Its gameplay and story weren't segregated - they were intertwined. The game chronicles the journey of Wander, a boy that is tasked with slaying 16 colossi in order to save the life of a young girl. It's a simple tale that has a nuance of guilt, as the colossi are huge, gentle creatures that are basically just minding their own business until a tiny person comes along and starts stabbing their shins. It's a very unique game that is essentially 16 boss fights strung together, but its strength lies both in its design and its subtle narrative. Shadow Of The Colossus doesn't make its meaning obvious, nor does it explain how to take down the ridiculously massive, intimidating bosses either. Everything about the game is open to interpretation by the player. There are few publishers that would fund a game like Shadow Of The Colossus' development for five years, but Sony patiently waited for Team Ico to finish their masterpiece, having faith that it would definitely be worth the wait. And it was.
