20 Years Of PlayStation: 20 Best Video Games So Far

3. Final Fantasy VII

Essentially, whichever Final Fantasy you experience first, will be your favourite - and considering the unbelievably high calibre of Final Fantasys VII through X, almost any could be thrown in here to replace VII. However, that being said there's just something about getting lost in FF VII's enviro-terrorist-turned-world-saving prophecy story that's packed with some of the best moments and characters Square have ever put together. The reveal behind who Cloud actually is, the relationship between him and Tifa or Aerith (one of which you'll still have a soft spot for), the grimy upper/lower class divide of Midgar and the sprawling open world you then break out and explore, are all phenomenal. Its themes are immediately engaging, gameplay-wise the materia system is the finest Square would do until FF X's Sphere Grid, and villain Sephiroth was an immediately iconic antagonist with just enough relatability to get on board with his actions - until he robbed you of a certain someone, anyway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhSicdniIng There's a good reason fans continually put Final Fantasy VII at the top of their most requested pile for a remake, and if Square's upcoming version can live up to the original - it'll be something truly special indeed.
