20 Years Of PlayStation: 20 Best Video Games So Far

14. Parappa The Rapper

Guitar Hero might have taken the rhythm action game template and make it a cultural phenomenon, but the very act of pushing buttons in time to music was done first by guys like Vib Ribbon and especially Parappa the Rapper. Parappa's quirky art style and brilliant gameplay put you centre stage in a string of paper art-style rap battles, but in a year (1996) that also saw the birth of Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot and - on the oppositional side - Mario 64, far too many people were busy having their eyes widened by gorgeous 3D graphics, making the loveable little pooch more of a cult hero that's remained iconic to this day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLN9AfPFALY Such an art style actually makes this surprisingly replayable - a quality that sits alongside its timing-based gameplay and soundtrack comprised of some brilliant songs, making it essential for any self-identifying PlayStation fan.
