25 Best Video Games Of The 90s

23. Super Mario World

The character that's arguably the most iconic video game hero of all time (or is it this guy?), Mario's first adventure gave us that theme, and although subsequent instalments would have split-releases in East and West territories, it was the freshly-named Super Mario World that introduced us all to Yoshi, fleshing out the little plumber's abilities in-game to include a range of projectiles and power-ups. All of this whilst further refining a difficulty curve that was oh-so close to perfect in the first place. Levels were more intricate (more than 70 of them in fact), secrets better hidden, and Mario himself even felt like he moved with an increased fidelity that would go on to influence essentially every 2D platformer in the future. Nintendo aren't in the business of hopping on the remaster-train alongside Sony or Microsoft right now, but considering how gorgeous SMW's graphics and overall aesthetic was (and still is), giving it a fresh coat of polish and re-releasing would reinvigorate such a timeless classic in a big way.
