19. Bad Day Here - Halo Wars
Sadly the last Halo Wars track on this list, "Bad Day Here" tops off the effort brought from Halo Wars in an epic way. It's a shame that the Halo Wars soundtrack doesn't get as much attention as it deserves; although limited in talent and scope, the amount of effort brought forth from Stephen Rippy really stood out, even if it was a one time deal. The culmination of all that work, "Bad Day Here", is the selling point to the soundtrack of Halo Wars to me for its very spacious and grand feel. Since Halo Wars follows in the footsteps of the RTS genre, intensive care had to be put into making the soundtrack feel right at home in that genre instead of making it loud and stilted like it belonged in a FPS. One incredible, breathtaking design choice for the Halo series has been space battles (although limited within the series) and taking all these small components and having them duke it out in the confines of space, turning a massive area into a silent graveyard. Perhaps one of the very few, and I mean very few, Halo tracks to showcase that feeling of space, hovering over planets, and viewing the starscape, is "Bad Day Here". The whole song is one giant science fiction nod to space with it's touch of piano chords, mature use of chorus, and a selection of strings played back over one another to replicate that feeling of looking out into the stars or to a planet. It's a truly incredible piece of audio composition that fits perfectly with exploration/adventure of Halo Wars, and a magnificent piece that shows off its science fiction prose.
