22. Pyramid Head

All things considered; Pyramid Head's popularity is laughably ironic. Outside of the character's role in Silent Hill 2, his purpose across the rest of the series is non-existent, having been imagined into existence from the tortured psyche of James Sunderland as an embodiment of the guilt and suffering he experienced over his wife's death. And yet, if anyone brings up the survival horror series in passing or it becomes the hot topic of a conversation, Pyramid Head will almost always be one of the first characters anyone then mentions. Some may say that the series as a whole is overlooked in favour of discussing the horrific nature of its creature nasties, but Konami shouldn't be anything other than flattered that such a largely inconsequential entity has penetrated the minds of many purely on the basis of the shocking imagery. It's just tough to nail on the head what it is that makes Pyramid Head so unsettling. Sure, he has a massive pyramid-shaped helmet set atop his shoulders, but it's the silent facelessness that really gets under the skin. Who and what is he, and what's he going to do with that oversized butcher's knife that he drags around everywhere with him like a treasured possession...
