2. The Ocean House Hotel - Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
The fact that we've covered everything from giant earthworms and chainsaw-wielding serial killers to giant Croc-men and Japanese ghosts without mentioning the original creature of the night says more about the sad state of vampires in popular culture in recent years than any Twilight jab ever could. It's a shame that the medium hasn't seen a proper vampire game in so long, as there's a ton of potential for crafting something totally fresh given the technology we're toying with nowadays. But whoever takes up the charge will have a hell of a time beating Troika Games' work on Vampire: The Masquerade - the single greatest bloodsucker sim ever created (and my personal favourite game). With an incredibly atmospheric world, layered RPG mechanics, razor-sharp (and oftentimes hilarious) writing and fantastic voice work, Bloodlines is a modern classic in every sense. And while it's not a "horror" game per se - or even a particularly scary one - one sequence damn sure does it best to make you forget the distinction. When you're tasked with exorcising a spirit from the Ocean House Hotel, it doesn't seem like anything you can't handle. After all, you're a vampire, aren't you? You are what stalks the night, and nobody can touch that, right? Well, as you navigate the seemingly endless corridors of the hotel, the behavior of the spirits becomes more and more violent. Try reminding yourself that you're supposed to be the big bad here for all it's worth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztXmBa6mgK8
