21. An Appointment With Doctor Death - Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain's a divisive experience for sure. When it comes to the big reveal of the Origami Killer's identity, there are two camps: those who felt that it was a brilliant subversion of gamers' expectations, or a complete slap in the face to the idea of "choice". Plot discrepancies aside, the game featured an array of genuinely suspenseful set-pieces, with "The Doc" chapter being a particular standout. As you sneak around the residence of Adrian Baker in search of clues, you're knocked senseless and the screen goes black as Madison loses consciousness. She wakes up to find herself strapped to a table while the "Doc" prepares a power drill to, well... let your imagination run wild. A rotting corpse in the corner of the room confirms what should be exceedingly obvious by this point: Adrian Baker is one sick dude. The masterful tension-building is what does it here, and when you couple that with the possibility that Madison can meet a very unfortunate end depending on the player's actions, it's a spectacular way to cap off the chapter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm8jSKt_gbI
