6. Running Fast Enough To Fly In Your Raccoon Suit - Super Mario 3

The first two Super Mario games established the core, series power-ups we all know and love. Super Mario 3 took the standard mushrooms, fire-flowers and invincibility stars and ran with them, adding hammer-throwing, sock and frog-hopping suits and of course, the infamous racoon getup. For many young platformers, this was a wild foray into breaking the standard constraints of ground-level, 2D action. For others, Super Mario 3 remains the finest example of platforming game design and mechanics ever.
