30 Best Video Games Of All Time
22. Super Mario 64
With Mario 64, Nintendo literally proved to the whole world that 3D gaming could not only work, but that it could be enjoyable, replayable, and a completely original step into furtive new territory.
Simply put: Without Mario 64 coming together as it did, your favourite video game of today wouldn't play the way it does.
From free camera movement to even navigating a space in 3D, Shigeru Miyamoto literally had to rewire his teams' brains to 'figure out' what a level even looked like when it wasn't seen from a side perspective. We most definitely take the idea of polygons and voxels for granted today, but all of this groundwork is necessary in championing just how monolithic Mario 64 was, and still is.
Nintendo's magic is always timeless, and just moving Mario through the various environments now still makes you appreciate what an achievement in game design this was - if not one whose gameplay aspects were then later refined over time.
