To many, World of Warcraft is literally another world of possibility. From auction houses to group raids, hoovering up crafting components to blowing five hours retrieving pieces of treasure from distant caves, Blizzard truly hit pay dirt when they took their already-beloved Warcraft formulae and spread it across a massively multiplayer open world.

In that regard, WoW represents one of the only times in gaming history where a developer completely changed genres (gameplay-wise) within a property, and actually succeeded in pleasing the fans and drawing in an exponentially larger crowd. Where before we had a Warcraft that was a top-down RTS, full of base-building and resource management, WoW took those basic cerebral ideas, flung the camera behind your protagonist's back and let you really explore the land, one settlement at a time.

Sure, it might seem somewhat rudimentary now, but back in 2004 this was genuinely medium-changing, allowing World of Warcraft to become a genuine cultural phenomenon. Thankfully - and again, unlike almost every other majorly online video game - Blizzard have retained millions of fans, letting their devoted legions live in Azaroth to this day.
