4 Doctor Who Games That Just Didn't Work (And 4 That Did)

8. Top Trumps (PS3, PC, Nintendo DS, Wii)

Everybody loves a good old fashioned game of Top Trumps and the Doctor Who extension of its brand has proven to be a particularly popular one, so much so that, in 2008, developers decided to take it one step by further by releasing an interactive version of the game for PlayStation 2. Because card games are so last year, man. Unfortunately by this point, the PS2 was "so last year", too, so the game - innocent though its intentions were - was doomed even prior to its timid release to be ignored by the legion of avid gamers who had already taken the leap by investing in the PS2's hotly anticipated successor. You see, sometimes even Doctor Who fails to get with the times. In an attempt to reignite its flame, though, subsequent versions were made readily available for the PC and Nintendo DS formats (and then even later the Nintendo Wii), however all ultimately also failed due to the overriding fact that the game itself just looked and felt too simple, even by the ageing standards of the limited consoles on which it could be obtained. A plus is that the accompanying artwork throughout the game is really rather good as past and then-present Doctors, plus a plethora of his faithful friends and formidable foes, are given a cartoon makeover, fully equipped with their own individual special powers and abilities which gives the otherwise lacking game an added sense of interactivity whilst highlighting the respective traits of their on screen personnas. There's some mini-games, too, which aren't really worth writing home about, but the game itself, much like its physical counterpart, proves to be really quite addictive once you get into it. Perhaps the real attraction is that, unlike the card game, this version can be played alone with the option to battle it out against the computer, a useful option if you find yourself without any friends which, let's face it, is probably likely.
