4 Pokémon Spin-Off Games Worth Playing (And 4 To AVOID)

1. PLAY - Pokemon Snap

Almost every interest, art, craft and passion has been turned into a game at some point, with varying degrees of success. Many games have incorporated photography in some shape of form - Final Fantasy XV made it the 'skill' of one of the four playable characters and Red Dead Redemption 2 allowed you to take selfies in 1899, to name but two. In-game photography is now an art form in its own right because of the likes of these, but very few games are wholly centred around it.

Pokémon Snap is one of the few, having released at the height of Pokemania back in 1999. Despite featuring just 63 of the original 151 creatures across its 7 on-rails levels, it was hugely addictive, necessitating several runs with expert timing and item usage (to lure certain types to you or to get them to evolve) to get the best shots.

Somewhat sluggish when played through the Virtual Console today, it nevertheless holds up as well as any other game from the era.

The appeal of photography in the real world, wildlife photography in particular, is getting one in a million shots. Snap and its virtualisation of this accomplishment with fictional creatures is definitely worthy of being replicated now that there's 809 Pokémon. Challenging players to find all of these in a huge in-game world, whether free roaming, on rails, or both, would be a hugely immersive and rewarding experience.

If only David Attenborough could narrate.
