It may surprise you to see the PSOne at the top of this list but it's here with good reason. Unlike the other systems on this list and unlike almost any other home console ever released, the PSOne was launched just months before its successor. Yes the PSOne's main competitor was the much anticipated PS2, but more surprising than that was just how well it fared. In 2000 the PSOne outsold every other system on the market, including Sony's own PS2. The console was only discontinued in Japan in 2009, which means in all its different forms the original PlayStation was in production for 15 years! The near 30 million units the tiny console shifted, plus the additional 9 years it gave the technology, puts the PSOne on top, as the best console redesign in history.
