5 Books That Would Make Great Video Games
3. Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?
The human/replicant lore of Phillip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? (filmed in 1982 as the sci fi classic Blade Runner) offers huge scope for an urban centred RPG. With Cyberpunk 2077 glittering on the horizon, the vaporwave art style gives Blade Runner the same retro appeal.
Humanity, existentialism and the sentience of AI have long been mainstays of sci fi literature, but have been known to feature in games down the years too. Played for laughs in Portal or examined much more seriously (if a little leaden handed) in new PS4 exclusive Detroit: Become Human, a Blade Runner game would allow players to dig deeper into these themes than ever before.
There’s bags of potential to open the world up too. While Harrison Ford’s portrayal is iconic (and would surely be the star’s defining role were it not for Han Solo and Indy), the world is so rich that Deckard wouldn’t even need to be there.
The original movie’s plot had little more than a cursory relationship with Phillip K. Dick’s novel. Bringing his world to video game format could see a gripping new story take the Blade Runner universe by storm.
