5 Books That Would Make Great Video Games
2. Hunger Games
How has this not happened yet? It seems to have all the right ingredients. Dystopian future, social commentary, heaps of violence and (Passengers aside) the ever-bankable Jennifer Lawrence.
Perhaps Katniss herself is the issue though. When we look at the books which became hugely successful movies around the same time as Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, we see Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. In both those cases, there’s worlds to explore. Hogwarts in Harry Potter and Mordor in Lord Of The Rings, which could explain why Lego was so eager to gamify them. The Hunger Games has the districts and the Capitol yes, but a big part of Katniss’ story is how linear it is, shifting her rapidly from place to place, revealing the destruction wrought by the ruling class.
So, what’s the solution? For the good of the game, Katniss may have to go altogether. Much like how the leaked Harry Potter RPG actually takes place several decades before Harry himself, a Hunger Games adaption could thrust gamers into the Games pre-Katniss in a battle royale style. Can’t have too many battle royales these days, right?
