Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy II was different from typical sequels in that its story was not related to that of its predecessor in any way, being set in a different world with a different cast of characters. In an attempt to further differentiate itself, it featured a complicated battle system that was dropped in subsequent entries. Despite the frustrating nature of said system, the game is surprisingly deep and dark for a NES release, focusing on a group of orphaned youths who seek to reclaim their homeland from an evil empire. Again, these tracks are remastered versions of the originals (bar number 4).
The Rebel Army The theme of the side to which the heroes belong, this is a track that effectively conveys both the tragedy of the loss of their home and the courage that they muster to try and take it back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-O3U2TmmX0
Temptation Of The Princess Though almost directly ripped from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, this piece is a perfect fit for the scene in which it plays, where main character Firion awkwardly falls victim to the seductiveness of a monster impersonating a princess. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqSep0vY56o
Main Theme Each game has a World Map theme, which is usually light and uplifting. In this instance, however, the composition is a somewhat downhearted one that suits the bleak landscape of the conquered world very well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onM81DpgSgs
Chocobo The flightless yellow birds that have become mascots of the series first debuted in the franchise's second entry, bringing with them this catchy piece, which has been remixed or reworked in almost every game since. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFRgjCa8kLQ
The Imperial Army In contrast to the Rebel Army theme, this piece feels much more militaristic and evil, much like the villainous army that it represents, who are responsible for several atrocities throughout the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_aXppbOhes
