5 Greatest Video Game Wingmen Of All Time

2. Roman Belic €“ Grand Theft Auto IV

gta4_roman Mr. Sleeze himself, Roman Belic, brought his cousin to the land of opportunity, gave him a job, an apartment and set him up with a lady. OK, so the job was free-lance taxi work, the apartment was a dump and the lady-friend turned out to be a secret agent......he meant well. Roman was a pain in the ass throughout GTAIV, he was a coward, got kidnapped, set you up with terrible people and threw you in at the deep end a few times but he truly cared for Niko and, most of the time, meant well. Maybe it was because he was your cousin, or because of pity, or something like that, but you liked Roman. In spite of all the stuff he did and was sure to do again, he was likable and you would stand up for him when need be. Roman is a great wingman, maybe not in a gun fight but in the more traditional sense, he'd definitely try and help you out whenever you need it and he constantly tried to set Niko up with women. Depending on how you finished GTA4, Roman's days as a wild bachelor are behind him but I'm sure he'd still set Niko up from time to time. From the get go Niko and Roman had a hilarious and interesting relationship, with Niko acting as his bodyguard. One of the first missions in the game sees Niko drive Roman to a poker game and wait outside until he comes running out, then you take off while someone chases Roman over money he owes. It immediately establishes the dynamic between the two. Niko always seemed a little annoyed by his cousin but you could tell he cared. This became really evident, after all, who could forget when Roman is kidnapped and Niko runs around screaming "Where is Roman?", it's slightly comical but no one was for messing with his cousin. A trend I've noticed is that wingmen tend to be somewhat annoying to the protagonist, Daxter bugs Jak, Zeke gets under Coles skin from time to time and Roman definitely annoys Niko. Maybe that's the price to pay for a great wingman. Roman was consistently important throughout GTA V, in terms of both story, character progression and how you earned money. Once again, he provided the game with some much-needed humour and his interactions with Niko were fantastic. Sure he was a coward but he was quintessential to GTA V and how the story moved forward. Roman was a great character who was a true wingman.
