5 Most Anticipated Open-World Games Of 2017

5. State Of Decay 2

Touted as one of the most successful zombie games along with Dead Island and Dying Light, the original State of Decay (2013) was widely acknowledged as a top contender in the survival horror genre. Taking place in a fictional Trumbull Valley set in the midwest, State of Decay focuses greatly on balancing survival resources, base-building, stealth, and overall survival.

Undead Labs teams back up with Microsoft for State of Decay 2, which shows off another beautifully-designed map which also seems to take place in a fictional midwest city. While the original was not the largest of maps (approximately 4x4 km, but closer to eight square kilometers was playable due to mountain ranges), it was definitely large enough to make vehicles convenient. Fans are hoping that Undead Labs expands the size of the playable area thanks to the increased limitations of current-gen consoles and PCs compared to last-gen.

The game continues its focus on stealth survival during a zombie apocalypse, but introduces a multiplayer cooperative mode that the original game lacked. Assuming that the survival, base-building, and resource-management elements are executed just as well this second time, the intro of multiplayer coop could turn State of Decay 2 into the top zombie game of 2017.

Only time will tell if it can outsell Resident Evil and Dead Rising and take a top spot in the horror genre this year.
