1. Niko
Niko is the worst character that I have ever played as in a game. I just couldn't care less about anything that he does, and the more I played as him, the less I liked him. He is a murdering nutcase who loves money and has no emotion. That is the hero of the game, folks. This psychotic serial killer draws zero compassion or empathy from me, and I'd bet a lot of people are the same. In short, the game makes you disconnect with Niko as a character early and never shows him doing anything that could redeem himself. Now, add to this a huge lack of customisation via no tattoos or haircuts and a limited wardrobe. You have to ask - what's the point? Why even play the game? Well, why indeed? If you have a PC, then mods. I still play GTA IV for that reason. I can fly around as Superman or Iron Man in an altered Liberty City that looks like the real New York complete with accurate billboards and scrolling neon ads, and all the stuff that you'd expect are there: glowing signs for Coke, Pepsi, the NASDAQ building and The Lion King/Phantom of the Opera adverts. The success of this game and its ease to be modded is proof that there was a great game here (check out the "cop mod"), but it was lost somewhere in the hype and rushed development, while Saints Row II can still be enjoyed, as it is, five years later. GTA IV without cheats or mods is just painful to play, so, as we await the fallout from today's GTA V release, I am interested to see if history will repeat. While mods made San Andreas even better, it could stand on its own as a game. Will GTA V be able to do the same? I guess we will all find out very soon.
