4. Boss Battles Of Insanity
Why do we love Kill Bill? Is it the style, the subtle references, or the wicked and odd fight scenes pitting Uma against some truly insane foes? Put me down for the latter. Suda creates the same level of creativity in the bosses he paints for our heroes to do battle with. His rogue's gallery includes a mailman turned Cosplay Super-Hero, a one legged Swedish model, and a rich girl who literally uses her leather clad henchmen as cannonballs, those are all from a single game. We are unfortunately subject to a gaming industry that is utterly starved of interesting Boss Battles, and that's not to mention how incredibly easy the ones we do have to endure tend to be. Im not sure about everyone else, but I love going head to head with the main villain who represents an authentic threat and deserves their top billing, and discovering what makes him tick. Getting killed a few times is just part of the game. And like Tarantino, Suda knows the value of a great boss battle, reveling in the occasion and rightly recognising that it is that element, and not necessarily the expositional work, or even the character-building elements that gamers and film fans remember long after the credits roll.
