5 Reasons You Need To Play Telltale's Batman
4. Genuinely Fresh, Updated Takes On Established Characters
One of the ways in which the Telltale Batman series manages to succeed is in the execution of the characters in the story that surround Bruce Wayne.
Quite quickly, Harvey Dent is introduced in to the story as a former attorney now running in Gotham's Mayoral election, funded by his good friend Bruce Wayne. It means we get the know Harvey as a person, not as the villain Two Face. And Telltale manage to handle the character perfectly.
Other charaters such as Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), The Joker, Tombstone, and Vicki Vale all show up in the story with a unique take and twist on their origins. An great, spoiler free, example of this is recasting Oswald Cobblepot as a childhood friend of Bruce, where the two were inseparable.
Telltale have also managed to introduce a new group, the Children of Arkham, and their enigmatic leader in to the narrative of Batman's world seamlessly - which shows not only a massive amount of respect for the world, but a deep understanding of Batman's lore, characters, and what fans would expect of a new villain. I find the whole group interesting, and well executed, and I'd love to see them beyond Telltale's game.
A lot of these new takes have to be experienced to be appreciated, so in order to avoid spoilers I won't go in to them, but the point is that even as a long-time fan of Batman I was still caught off guard and kept guessing throughout. It's a real testament to Telltale's skill with narrative that I'll really miss the character as they're portrayed in this version of events.
