5 Ways RPG Games Are Falling Behind

3. Story Telling

Story telling Although Mass Effect pretty much revolutionised story telling when it was released, with its three arc story and importable saves. However, some of the cinematography and cinematic effect isn't the greatest. It is still good, but not as good as the likes of Uncharted or Splinter Cell: Conviction . However, The Witcher 2 and Skyrim don't do as well. The Witcher 2 features awkward acting and stunted dialogue, and strange, unexplained fades during conversation. Skyrim fails to put your character in the story at all: it's just clicking dialogue while someone else does all the talking. While I understand Bethesda doesn't give the character a voice, story or name, that's up to you, there is no epic moments or immersive first person cut-scenes. Look at the likes of Far Cry 3: if another character hands you something, you see your arms go out and grab it, reminding you that you are a person in this world. In Skyrim, the Jarl will give you a weapon upon becoming Thane, and they will statically stand there while a message informs you that you gained the Axe of Whiterun. Yay. Story telling is something that is evolving so quickly in games, so why isn't the RPG genre catching up?

I live in Australia, love to write and play games. So what better than writing about games? I love all things action and fantasy, as well as my occasional shooter. I literally cannot wait for GTAV!
