3. Talking To People
I know this is a tough one. As a games journalist, the only people you talk to are NPCs and Steams tech support, but bear with me. If youre the kind of bottom-feeding, journalistic plankton thats being invited to play Ed Smith Sim 2000 (you know, like me) then its important to make friends with a few of the staff-writing basking sharks that have also turned up. These are the guys that can open doors for you; they have so many industry contacts that they need two Blackberries to hold them all. So pal up to them. Id like to be able to give you some advice on how to do this, but Im about as good with networking as a Nokia 3210 with its SIM card removed. Just dont be weird, yeah? Make sure youve prepared something clever/funny to say about the industry before you go over and if you think its appropriate, mention the work youve been doing and what youd like to do next. If all that goes to plan, you can go for fourth base and slip them your email address, you playa.
