50 Greatest Games Of This Generation

34. Battlefield 3

35 Battlefield 3Platforms: PlayStation 3 /Xbox 360 Release Date: 28 October, 2011 This genre has seen the first-person shooter rise to the top. They are by far the most popular genre, with millions of people jumping online every day to take out their friends and enemies over the internet. Battlefield 3 was EA€™s shot across the bow to Activision and their Call of Duty series which has dominated the FPS market this generation. Battlefield 3 though is a very different game than Call of Duty. It puts much more focus on teamwork and vehicular warfare. Games take place over huge maps with fighter jets and helicopters soaring overhead while tanks pound at enemy buildings. Perhaps its biggest difference though is the almost completely destructible environment, making no place safe to hide. Battlefield 3 provided some of the best online multiplayer with a strong FPS formula that certainly ruffled Activision€™s feathers.

33. Portal 2

34 Portal 2Platforms: PlayStation 3 /Xbox 360 Release Date: 21 April, 2011 Portal was one of the strangest games to release for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The innovative portal gun provided a brand new puzzle mechanic and Valve€™s storytelling and compelling characters added meat to the game. The sequel expanded upon the concept, adding more mechanics to create more diverse and dynamic puzzles. Although challenging, many of the puzzles had simple solutions that left you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside when you finally understood them. The gameplay of Portal 2 was simply outstanding with one of the best learning curves of any game I have played. While on the other hand brilliant voice acting and developed characters help to make the world of Portal feel alive and not the sterile test laboratory that it essentially is.

32. Borderlands

33 BorderlandsPlatforms: PlayStation 3 /Xbox 360 Release Date: 23 October, 2009 Borderlands breathed fresh life into the first-person shooter genre by including new elements, just as character progression, loot drops and a carefully designed co-operative experience. The loot system worked incredibly well, with thousands of different types of guns, and encouraged co-op gameplay by rewarding difficulty increases. The FPS gameplay was solid and enjoyable, even if enemy A.I. wasn€™t superb, leading to a game that combined all of its elements to be funny and thoroughly entertaining. Not only that but in a generation rife with lacklustre downloadable content, Gearbox created some excellent expansions that really did add to the overall experience.
