6 Amazing Video Games Almost Destroyed By Terrible Mechanics

4. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - The Luck Based Boss Fight

Who doesn’t love a healthy dose of RNG? Anybody?

Sure, I’m down for the odd random encounter in a game, or randomised drops, or whatever, but when it comes to boss fights? No. Boss fights should be a test of skill, not luck. Luck based bosses are so infuriating because if the RNG God is not on your side, you lose. It’s not your fault, there’s nothing you could have done to prevent it, but f*ck you anyway.

Enter: The Boost Guardian from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The creature has an infuriating attack where it curls up and boosts around the tiny arena like sonic the hedgehog in a pinball machine. It’s completely impossible to predict where it will redirect to next, meaning you just have to spam jump and hope it doesn’t crash into you. To make matters worse, you’re constantly taking damage from being in the Dark World, and only way to regain health is if you’re lucky enough for the boss to smash through one of the pillars around the room, which drop health refills.

To summarise, you not only have to get lucky by not being hit by the completely random, hyper speed attack, but you also have to hope that the same attack destroys one of the pillars or you’ll die to the Dark World anyway. The luck factor makes it the bane of every Prime 2 speedrun and casual playthrough alike.
