6 Classic Adventure Video Games Kids Today Should Be Made To Play
3. Flight Of The Amazon Queen
The following four titles would easily make it into my own top twenty games of all time, but Flight of the Amazon Queen (Interactive Binary Illusions 1995) may even be top ten material. I recently got hold of a copy and laughed my way through the whole thing in a couple of afternoons. Granted; I remembered the vast majority of the puzzles from my teens, but the story was just as ridiculous and enjoyable as I ever found it. More so, in fact, as many of the more adult-oriented and pop-culture gags that were lost on me then really hit home this time around. Both an unabashed pastiche of the graphic adventure genre and a direct homage to LucasArtss two excellent Indiana Jones games; FOTAQ is a tongue-in-cheek point-and-click. You control Joe King (har har), pilot for hire, who becomes stranded in the Amazon rainforest after his plane crashes. Responsible for saving his sole passenger, a conceited actress; Joe soon finds himself embroiled in the ridiculous plot of a mad scientist who, operating under the cover of his international lederhosen company, is trying to take over the world. Some of FOTAQs later puzzles are frustratingly oblique, as the developers send up the genre by including more ridiculous props and solutions. However, the script and its increasingly wacky scenarios are well worth seeing the challenge through. This is a game for anybody 16+, who appreciates Pythonesque and satirical comedy. Luckily, it has been released as freeware and is available for download from GOG.com.
