1. Protagonist Who "Won't Give Up" And Has The Greatest of Ethics
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (Reacting to criticism with shame, exaggerating own importance, requiring positive reinforcement, unrealistic goals, wanting "the best", becoming easily jealous)
Patients: Asbel (Tales of Graces), Sora (Kingdom Hearts), Allegretto (Eternal Sonata), Alistair (Dragon Age: Origins), Tidus (FFX), Snow (FFXIII) "I realized that I didn't want to help myself, I wanted to help others!" Oh whatever Mr. Needs-To-Be-A-Hero. There's always a self-realization along those lines that are complete...ugh. I understand that the whole point of a protagonist is to show anything is possible and in video game land, anything is, but these characters are getting
old and
very annoying. There always "has to be another way". Oh for god's sake, haven't we been through enough sewers? As a protagonist, these characters usually lack dimension and are
extremely predictable as they will always do what is morally right. Thankfully, recent RPGs have us making our own decisions and choosing our own appearance. Take that as finding "another way!"
Bonus: Random Creature Who Has No Importance To The Storyline
NormalPatients: Kimahri (FFX), Fran (FFXII), Koromaru (Persona 3), Yangus (Dragon Quest VIII) Wait, what? That's right, these characters join the party for novelty purposes alone. They really serve very little to no importance to the overall story. They don't stand out from the crowd and are sometimes forgettable. All because they're actually quite normal when it comes down to it. If they came to our world, we'd all just assume they're going to a cosplay convention or simply love Halloween. There we have it. A really rough rundown of the crazy personalities we repeatedly find in RPGs - mostly Japanese ones to be frank. In the real world, these disorders are obviously serious and I mean no harm. Really. Now stop trying to compare yourself with these characters!
