6 Most Shocking Video Game Plot Twists Of 2018 (So Far)

5. The Nuke - Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 is a complete mess in any storytelling or narrative sense. Once posited by its own creators to be some sort of commentary or reflection of political tensions in modern-day America, the actual story is more like zombie fiction, following scores of cult members worshipping the utterings of "prophet" Joseph Seed.

This manifests across the "story" through an indoctrination drug named Bliss, and a number of encounters with Seed himself, where he espouses your standard, "I've seen the light/the end times are coming/I can save them all"-type gubbins.

Cut to the end of the game and you're presented with a choice: Arrest Seed, or walk away. Doing the former sees him enter in a monologue about "trumpets sounding" and how he's heard word from "the temple", and just as your character states "you're under arrest"... a nuke goes off in the distance.

The rest of this sequence plays out like the apocalypse is happening and Seed was right all along, ending when - after a car crash - you and Joseph end up in another underground bunker, waiting out the carnage together as the only two people left.

Why? Because video games.
