6 Reasons Microsoft Needs A Great E3
3. Kinect 2.0
Of everything we know about the Xbox One, I personally think that Kinect 2.0 is the scariest. First, in a risky move, Xbox is integrating the Kinect system into the console as a whole. Kinect 2.0 will ship with the console and will be required for Xbox One to even function. To me, that kind of integration is infuriating. While saying "Xbox on" or "Watch live TV" sounds pretty cool, I don't want Kinect 2.0 to control my every whim.
We've also heard that the Kinect system cannot be disabled or turned off. This is the scariest possibility out there. That means that Kinect is always on and always listening. While Kinect is supposedly going to integrate a new level of personalization for Xbox One, the possibility exists that any information gathered could reach a host of third parties. In addition, Kinect could be used to enforce DRM. When watching a movie, Kinect 2.0 could scan the room to determine if licensing rights are being violated. Overall, this technology just feels like it could be an overreach of privacy, and Microsoft desperately needs to avoid negative attention for this.
