6 Reasons Why Everyone Loves The Elder Scrolls Games

1. You Don't Just Explore Tamriel - You Live In It

"Live another life in another world."

These are the words written on the back of the box of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's what sold me on this whole series.

Above all else, in spite of whatever flaws these games have, Bethesda has stayed true to this. Open world games are pretty commonplace nowadays, but few others come close to building worlds as massive and detailed as these, and that's worthy of praise, even if the gameplay isn't perfect and tends to be a bit buggy.

Other games might give you a big landscape to roam around in - and even a lot of places to explore - but The Elder Scrolls drops you into a world that you don't just explore, but live in.

You can take a stroll through town, go hunting, read a book, talk to people, barter for goods, go on adventures, come back, make a home for yourself and explore not just big dungeons, but tiny spaces as well, full of interact-able people and objects.

That's what makes The Elder Scrolls so great. It isn't the grand scale of the world, but just how much time we can spend living in it.

Ken was born in 1994, and before the turn of the century, he was already a gamer for life, starting with Pokémon Blue Version. He has a passion for storytelling, especially in the gaming medium. Growing up on a healthy diet of JRPGs and point and click adventure games, young Kenny grew up playing Nintendo and Sony consoles, before becoming a snobby member of the PC Master Race. Nowadays, he resides in a time warp, refusing to believe the nineties ended as he fills up his Steam library with old point and clicks and cRPGs.
