6 Sports With No Good Video Game In Years

Fight Night Game
EA

Golf used to be a major part of EA Sports’ annual lineup alongside FIFA, NHL and Madden. A licensed PGA Tour game was released every year between 1994 and 2015, with sixteen of those games bearing the name of the great Tiger Woods. These games were often very hit and miss, with the release schedule heavily questioned given that golf lacks the need for team roster updates that are the main yearly change in other sports games.

Following Woods’ struggle with injuries, the decision was made to recast the franchise with the fresher face of Rory McIlroy in 2015. Following negative reviews aimed at the lack of content in the game, a second title bearing the Northern Irishman’s name was shelved and the series has been in limbo since.

Elsewhere, arcade golf games fare reasonably well. It is another sport where Nintendo’s mascot Mario has made his mark, whilst Sony’s Everybody’s Golf is always good for a laugh.

A solid simulation of the world’s second most popular individual sport (after tennis) has been lacking in what seems like forever, however. 2K picked up the PGA licence when EA let it lapse, but their one release, The Golf Club 2019, sank without trace and there has been no word of a follow-up anytime soon.
