Silent Hill 2 has a number of possible endings but the harrowing 'in water' conclusion, in which tortured protagonist James drives to a watery grave with his wife Mary's body in the car, is considered definitive by many.

Hard-hitting though it may be, not everything about it adds up, as the location of his wife's corpse at the beginning of the game, and why it suddenly materialises right at the end, remains shrouded in mystery.

The fans have had their say on this, and many believe Mary's body was in the trunk of the vehicle the whole time. It turns out they were half right, as designer Masahiro Ito has confirmed on Twitter that the cadaver was always located in the back seat of the car.

"Mary's body is in the back seat of James's car, not in the trunk, if I remember correctly."

Masahiro's comments could have inspired a dozen more conspiracy theories about why the body is never visible in the back of the car, but he had an answer to that too.

Apparently, James has repressed his wife's fate so hard that he no longer even sees the corpse in front of him, which is as convenient as it is chilling.
