7 Best Candidates To Direct A Shadow Of The Colossus Movie
7. Hayao Miyazaki
Playing Shadow of the Colossus one can safely assume that its creator Fumito Ueda was heavily influence by the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki. Everything from the character and creature designs, to the epic visuals and the overall tone of the game, is unmistakably reminiscent to Miyazakis signature style.
Rooted deeply in Japanese traditions and mythology, Miyazaki sees humanity in conflict with the old world of gods and demons. This foreshadowing of the end of gods era and the dawn of man is evident in his masterpiece Princess Mononoke, where his hero Ashitaka gets cursed battling a demonized boar god and sets off on a quest for a cure, in a god-dwelling land that faces extinction. This theme, mans everlasting battle with natures rampant forces, which is met throughout his filmography, is ultimately Shadow of the Colossus in a nutshell.
So in many ways, this is the perfect Hayao Miyazaki project. Having said that, the Japanese master usually prefers to tell his own original stories, so it is doubtful if he would be willing to constrain his limitless imagination adapting such a specifically visually constructed world. Plus, hes unfortunately retired!
