7 Deadly Gaming Sins - ENVY
3. Chasing Trends Kills Studios

One of the biggest downsides of letting envy consume your decision-making skills is that sometimes actually getting what others have worsens the situation for everyone else. As an example take a look at all of the studios that have chased trends so hard that it ended up saturating entire genres to the point where the bubble bursts and the bottom falls out of the market.
Remember when the survival genre was all the rage and people shoehorned in base building and scavenging mechanics? We all became sick of the laboured process of just keeping our protagonists alive, and as more and more developers piled into the market, players became more and more fatigued until sales figures dictated it was time to move on to the next big thing.
However, in amongst all the jostling for sales, developers are crushed underfoot or nosedive hard into the ground hoping to cash in on the latest trend. Boss Key studios chased both the hero shooter formula and then pummelled its head against the Battle Royale genre in an attempt to gain recognition, but it was too little too late. Konami infamously tried to cash in on both the namesake of Metal Gear and the dying survival game genre and bombed with Metal Gear Survive, and numerous others have gone to the grave thanks to envy driving them after trends instead of leading them.
