The gaming juggernaut of Grand Theft Auto almost never came to be. The original game, developed at DMA Design was actually almost never released at all. It was burdened with bugs that meant it crashed all the time and the car was impossible to handle. However, another gaming glitch came to the rescue of the franchise.

The bug had to do with the police’s AI. It caused them to be hyper aggressive, and attempt to run the player's car right of the road. It turned out that high velocity cars smashing each other off the road was a load of fun, enough fun in fact that the developers felt the project was worth salvaging. GTA become a more eccentric game and spawned the countless sequels that increasingly leaned in to that hyperbolic frenzy driven mania the franchise is so beloved for.
