7. Mechanic Experiments

Technology based enhancement is something that should be good in theory turned into a hellish nightmare. These experiments are usually driven by either the military war machine or a desire for human evolution. They certainly take place in sci-fi games such as Bioforge, but these types of experiments have also been seen in fantasy games using arguably more primitive technology such as the mechanists below in the early Thief series. These experiments typically involve nasty, painful implants on abducted people that are designed to augment a natural ability but more often just cause madness in the subject. This madness ends up leaving them a broken hostile mess. If things do go well and madness is avoided it's generally because the subject was already insane to begin with, which seems to happen when the experiments are on overzealous cult members. Otherwise this type involves the use of mechanical golems or other near sentient contraptions such as the Thief mechanists and dwarves from the Elder Scrolls series. Why Does It Belong Here? In order to have this kind of enhancement the body would have to have every movement synced with its metal addition. That means every tendon and nerve would have to be attached to the contraption, which is a horrid thought but a common concept to the games dealing with machine integration. The implications of the experiments is bad enough, but the idea gets disturbing on a whole new level when you hear people start to equate the concept with deities. The mechanists and dwarves are famous for equating mech advancement with getting closer to their deities. For dwarves it got to the point where they believed themselves to be gods and ended up destroying their civilization. The destruction of civilization is a rare thing for this experiment type though, and it doesn't always end horribly. In the case of mechanists they actually end up advancing technology quite a bit in the city they live in. The experiments are gruesome enough, but because of this type's low consequence level it just barely makes the list at number 7.
