4. Limbo
Developer : Playdead - 1200 Microsoft Points Limbo is both hugely atmospheric and incredibly unsettling all at once. You control a small boy on his journey through the monochromatic world of Limbo searching for his lost sister. On your travels through Limbos various creepy environments youll solve puzzles, thwart arachnids and come to the realisation that an untimely death is only a mis-step away. Never have I played a game that filled me with such a sense dread of what may be lurking around the next corner, while simultaneously encouraging me to carry on to find out whats next. The simplistic visuals and eerie sounds are haunting and you're unlikely to forget your first grim encounter with one of the many children that also inhabit the forest. Developers Playdead describe Limbo as a trial-and-death game and that really does sum it up. You're going to die a lot, in fact a whole lot and thankfully the game regularly check points you throughout the level meaning, that there is little in the way of backtracking. The trial and error aspect may sound annoying, but it feels really rewarding, especially when you manage to conquer a puzzle flawlessly. Limbo may contain next to no story, but the atmosphere that it exudes and its a ability to shock you with the sheer coldness in the way it deals with death time and time again will keep this title firmly ingrained in your memory. If you havent yet experienced Limbo, now is the time to do so.
